Lecture by Prof. Heinz D. Kurz

The recent financial and systemic crisis emphasizes the need for a thorough discussion of the role of economic history for the economics profession in order to solve social, financial and economic challenges in capitalism. We are pleased that Prof. Heinz D. Kurz will deliver a keynote on ’Seeking a histoire raisonnée. The role of political economy’ in the context of the Eighth Young Economists Conference.

Abstract

In Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy (1942), Joseph A. Schumpeter credited Karl Marx with having been „the first economist of top rank to see and to teach systematically how economic theory may be turned into historical analysis and how the historical narrative may be turned into histoire raisonnée.“ This lecture exemplifies the concept under consideration in terms of a few examples, which all revolve inter alia around the following ideas: the non-intended consequences of human action and the endogenous self-transformation of socio-economic systems.

The focus of attention is on the demise of feudalism, as seen by Adam Smith, the rise and fall of capitalism, as seen by Marx, and the rise of socialism, as seen by Schumpeter. Each of these authors used the political economy he had elaborated plus insights from other disciplines to argue his case. The question is whether and in which regard they succeeded and whether and in which regard they failed.

Heinz D. Kurz is Professor of Economics at the University Graz and Director of the Graz Schumpeter Centre. He is one of the leading scholars in the field of history of economic thought and economic theory. Heinz D. Kurz has published numerous articles in journals, his books have been translated to various languages and he received multiple awards and honours for his work.

This event is part of the Young Economists Conference 2019. You can find the conference program and the possibility to register following this link. Please register until the 23rd of September 2019.
